The fight against new HIV infections is active and many countries target the objective of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030, in Europe but also in other continents including Africa. Today, the control of new cases of HIV infection requires multiple different aspects: use of condoms, regular testing and treatment when infection is diagnosed, well controlled viral infection under antiretroviral drugs in infected people, and pharmacological prevention in people non-infected people, as well as detection and treatment of the other sexually transmitted infections.
The use of antiretroviral in non-infected people before a high-risk behavior has been expanded for years.
The objectives of this lecture are:
- To learn the target populations for such prophylaxis and identify the potential risks for specific individuals.
- To know the commercialized drugs and their development.
- To adapt the knowledge to local practice, taking into consideration a multidisciplinary approach and the public health context.
