EADV calls for political attention to skin diseases at event in European Parliament

EADV European Parliament event ‘The burden of skin disease in Europe’ and launch of Call to Action on chronic inflammatory skin disease

On 24th October, as part of EADV’s advocacy programme, a delegation made up of the Leadership, Advocacy Working Group and other members, held a dedicated meeting on skin diseases at the European Parliament.

The meeting was hosted by Members of the European Parliament Istvan Ujhelyi (S&D, Hungary), Radka Maxova (S&D, Czech Republic), Tomislav Sokol (EPP, Croatia) and Maria Spyraki (EPP, Greece).

EADV members presented the prevalence of skin disease and it’s impact on individuals, healthcare systems and society, and explained to policymakers the role of dermato-venereology and its contribution to the progress of medicine.

A psoriasis patient gave personal insights of living with a skin disease and stressed the importance of the patients’ voice, and of collaboration between patients’ organisations and the wider skin disease community.

The meeting marked the launch of EADV’s Call to Action on chronic inflammatory skin diseases. The EADV and 24 signatories to the document, which include dermatology and patient organisations, as well as 18 national societies, call on the EU, Member States and stakeholder organisations to commit to driving forward positive change in the field of chronic inflammatory skin diseases across the following priority areas:

  • Improving public awareness and reducing the stigma of skin disease
  • Timely and equitable access to high quality treatment and care
  • Supporting the development of new therapies and technologies
  • Addressing the economic impact on the individual and on society
  • Creating an ecologically sustainable future for dermatology
